About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church, at 230 Bow Road in east London, served the Church of England parish of Bromley St Leonard’s. The church building no longer stands. It was ruined in wartime air raids, and subsequent works for the road leading to the Blackwall Tunnel erased what remained of the site. The burial ground has nevertheless survived.
Bromley St Leonard’s became a separate parish from Stepney in 1536. Its congregation used the former church of St Leonard’s Priory, a Benedictine community for women that had recently been suppressed. The interior was distinguished by notable carved memorials. Later road construction cut the parish’s principal residential district off from its area beside the river.
