About St Mary Magdalene's Church

St Mary Magdalene's Church is an active Church of England parish church in East Ham, London. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, it belongs to the East Ham Team Parish with three other local churches. The Grade I listed building is believed to be Greater London’s earliest parish church that continues to hold services each week.

The nave, chancel and rounded apse originated during the early 12th century, while the tower was probably added in the early 1200s and partly reconstructed in the 16th century. Medieval details include a piscina recess beside the chancel and faint 13th-century painted decoration in the apse. Sir Richard Heigham donated the white marble font in 1639, and several historic monuments remain. Wartime bombing in 1941 destroyed the chancel roof and all the stained glass. Repairs began promptly, with further major restoration undertaken in 1950 and during 1965 and 1966.
