About St Mary

St Mary is a Church of England church on May Road in Plaistow, within the London Borough of Newham. It remains a place of worship, using a smaller church completed in 1981. The church has been associated with the Parish of the Divine Compassion alongside St Matthias, St Martin, and St Philip and St James.

Originally established to support All Saints, West Ham, the church became a separate parish in 1844. Sir John H Pelly provided the land, and Thomas Curtis designed an early neo-Gothic church with late Perpendicular influences. During Thomas Given-Wilson’s time as vicar, extensive rebuilding increased capacity to 1,000. Sir Arthur William Blomfield designed the Victorian building created between 1890 and 1894; it was demolished in 1976. The parish also founded several mission churches locally from the 1880s onwards.
