About St Martin's Church, Plaistow
St Martin’s Church, Plaistow is a Church of England parish church on Boundary Road in Plaistow, within the London Borough of Newham. In October 2017, the church regained its status as an independent parish after many decades. Regular services in Portuguese began in July 2019, followed by services in Spanish from March 2021.
The church was constructed as a mission church in 1894. Its foundation stone was placed on 28 June by Henrietta Pelham-Clinton, the Dowager Duchess of Newcastle. The original timber parish hall remained until 1997 and included an adjoining air-raid shelter dating from the Second World War. Cottrell and Vermeulen renovated the hall that year, while also creating a community facility and housing. Before becoming a separate parish, the church belonged to the Parish of the Divine Compassion alongside three other churches in Plaistow and Canning Town.
