About St John's Chapel, Tower of London
St John’s Chapel, Tower of London is a Church of England place of worship within the White Tower in London. Dating from 1080, it is the earliest complete chapel still standing from the first Norman period. The Grade I listed building now serves as a chapel royal, with services held at intervals during the year. Oversight rests with the Canon of St Peter ad Vincula, who also serves as the Tower’s chaplain.
The chapel formed part of the White Tower’s original design under William the Conqueror. Built using Caen stone brought from France, it has a barrel-vaulted nave, groined side aisles and an eastern apse encircled by an upper gallery. Plain arches rise from substantial circular piers, while restrained scallop and foliage carvings provide decoration. Henry III enriched the interior by ordering the installation of three stained-glass windows in 1240. Before royal coronations, medieval Knights of the Bath once kept vigil here after their ceremonial bathing.
