About St Giles-without-Cripplegate
St Giles-without-Cripplegate is a Church of England church on Fore Street in London’s Barbican. Originally positioned beyond the City wall close to Cripplegate, it is dedicated to St Giles. The church remains one of the City’s few surviving medieval places of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1950.
An earlier Saxon building was replaced by a Norman church around 1090, followed by a Perpendicular Gothic rebuilding in 1394. After fire damage in 1545, it was reconstructed, and a stone tower followed in 1682. Although spared by London’s fire of 1666, it suffered further fires in 1897 and during the Blitz. Post-war restoration followed the 1545 design. Furnishings and the organ came from St Luke Old Street, while twelve bells were installed in 1954 and an additional bell in 2006. John Milton and John Foxe are among those buried here.
