St George & St Ethelbert stands on Burford Road in East Ham, Greater London. It belongs to the Church of England and serves a parish that became independent in 1923. Its beginnings were connected with St Mary Magdalene’s in East Ham.
Around 1912, land was acquired on the Greatfield Estate for a new mission. By 1914, a provisional hall called St George’s was in use where Boston Road meets Masterman Road. The present church was not constructed until 1936–37. The Diocese of Hereford supplied over half the money required for the project and requested that St Ethelbert be added to the church’s name. This reflected Hereford Cathedral’s dedication, which honours Ethelbert together with the Virgin Mary.
