About St. George's Cathedral
St. George's Cathedral stands where Albany Street meets Redhill Street in St Pancras, within the London Borough of Camden. The Grade II* listed building belonged to the Anglican tradition before serving as an Antiochian Orthodox cathedral between 1989 and 2023. It was permanently shut in 2023 following concerns about its condition, and the metropolitan bishop’s seat transferred to an Orthodox parish in Kensington.
Designed by James Pennethorne, the church opened for Anglican worship in 1837 and served the predominantly working-class community around Cumberland Market. Its classical design uses brick, stucco and stone, with a rectangular footprint, arched windows and broad projecting structures marking each corner. Above the doorway is a tower crowned by a small eight-sided spire. R. C. Carpenter oversaw changes from 1839 to 1843, while William Butterfield added a richly patterned marble floor in 1867. The roof was renewed in 2000.
