About St Clement Eastcheap
St Clement Eastcheap serves as an Anglican parish church within the City of London, in Candlewick Ward. The building occupies Clement’s Lane, close to King William Street, with the Thames and London Bridge nearby. It remains a place of parish worship and has Grade I listed protection.
A church on the site may be the one recorded in a document issued in 1067, but its earliest confirmed mention comes from the time of Henry III. After repairs during the 1630s, the medieval structure was destroyed in London’s fire of 1666. Construction of the present church started in 1683 and concluded four years later. Christopher Wren is credited with the design, while Edward Strong the Elder oversaw the building work. The parish had already been joined with St Martin Orgar in 1670.
