About St Alban's Church
St Alban’s Church serves the Upton Park neighbourhood of East Ham, in Greater London, as an Anglican church dedicated to England’s first recorded martyr. Today it belongs to the East Ham Team Parish, otherwise named the Parish of the Holy Trinity, together with St Mary Magdalene’s, St Bartholomew’s and St Edmund’s.
Its origins date to about 1889, when St Stephen’s established a mission in Boleyn Road. A compact brick church followed in Wakefield Street eight years later. In 1903, St Alban’s gained an independent parish, while the nave and one aisle of a permanent building were finished across the road. The structure was enlarged in 1934 with vestry rooms, a chapel honouring the Virgin Mary and a chancel. Wartime bombing caused damage in 1940, and restoration was carried out in 1949.
