Saint Mary’s is a Roman Catholic parish in Chelsea, within Greater London, with its address on Draycott Terrace. It remains a place of Catholic worship and has Grade II* protection. The parish is among the earlier Catholic foundations in the centre of the capital.
Worship on the site dates to 1812, when Abbé Jean Voyaux de Franous established a chapel chiefly for military personnel and retired servicemen associated with Chelsea College, now Royal Hospital Chelsea. During the middle of the nineteenth century, the parish added facilities including schools, a convent and almshouses. Work on the current building began in 1877 and finished two years later. Its architect was John Francis Bentley, who subsequently designed Westminster Cathedral. Cardinal Manning formally blessed the church at its opening in May 1879.
