About Catholic Church of St Mary, Moorfields
The Catholic Church of St Mary, Moorfields stands at 4–5 Eldon Street, close to Moorgate in the City of London. It is a Roman Catholic place of worship and the City’s sole Catholic church. The active church has a particular focus on outreach to younger people employed in the nearby financial district. It is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Catholic worship on Moorfields sites dates back to a chapel founded in 1686, which closed three years later. Subsequent chapels included one destroyed during the Gordon Riots of 1780 and a neoclassical church completed in 1820, which later served temporarily as London’s pro-cathedral. Construction of the Metropolitan Railway led to that building’s demolition in 1899. George Campbell Sherrin designed its replacement on Eldon Street, fitting the entrance between existing shopfronts. The present church opened in 1903 and was consecrated on 25 March that year. Its gallery organ was built by Corps and appears to predate the current building.
