About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church is a Church of England parish church on Staplefield Road in Haywards Heath, serving Slaugham and a wider rural parish in the Sussex Weald. It remains in parish use and holds Grade II* protection in recognition of its architectural and historic interest.

The church has origins in the early 12th century, with surviving fabric including part of the nave’s north wall, a doorway and the font. A western tower was begun late in the 13th century, when a south aisle and broad arcades were also created. The chancel was rebuilt early in the following century. In 1613, William Covert added a family chapel containing an elaborate memorial to Richard Covert, shown with his wives and children. Joseph Clarke carried out extensive Victorian restoration between 1857 and 1860, enlarging the aisle, raising the tower and adding a vestry and organ chamber. Later changes included another vestry and a tower clock.
