About Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic parish church on Edge Hill in Wimbledon, south-west London. Serving Wimbledon and nearby districts within the Archdiocese of Southwark, it is now administered by the archdiocese following more than 130 years of Jesuit oversight. The church stands beside Wimbledon College and Donhead Preparatory School and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

Edith Arendrup of the Courtauld family established the parish after moving to Wimbledon in 1877, initially arranging for Jesuits from Roehampton to celebrate Mass at her home. She later commissioned Frederick Walters to design a substantial church in late Decorated Gothic style. The nave opened in 1887, with further sections added in stages before the west front was completed in 1901. Financial constraints prevented the planned large western tower, so the finished façade has two turrets and an imposing window with tracery. A memorial to Arendrup is set into the south wall. The reordered sanctuary, dedicated in 1990, includes a new altar and a bronze reliquary holding martyrs’ relics.
