St John the Evangelist stands on Lower Church Road in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, and serves as the town’s Church of England parish church. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Originally the first Anglican church established in Burgess Hill, it later oversaw several mission chapels and daughter churches; these have since closed or become separate parishes.
Designed by Thomas Talbot Bury in the Gothic Revival style, the church was constructed using locally made brick. Work began after the foundation stone was laid in November 1861, and the completed building was consecrated in June 1863. It initially accommodated about 700 worshippers and served Clayton and Keymer before receiving its own parish in 1865. Bury also planned the south aisle, completed in 1875, while a vestry followed in 1889. The churchyard contains the grave of Annie Mackintosh, whose memorial also commemorates her son, Antarctic explorer Aeneas Mackintosh.
