About Parish Church of St. Stephen

The Parish Church of St. Stephen is an active Church of England parish on Gloucester Road, at its junction with Southwell Gardens in South Kensington, London. This Grade II* listed church follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition, with services held on Sundays and weekdays and music provided by a professional choir.

Established as the local population grew during the mid-Victorian era, the parish first worshipped in a temporary iron structure built in 1865. The permanent church was designed by Joseph Peacock, constructed in 1866–67 and consecrated in January 1867, although its intended tower was never completed. Hugh Roumieu Gough added an octagonal vestry and Lady Chapel in 1887, while stained glass by Nathaniel Westlake followed during the 1890s. George Frederick Bodley and Walter Tapper later created the gilded wooden reredos and galleries for the choir and organ. The Norman and Beard organ dates from 1905 and was expanded in 2001. A memorial commemorates poet and former churchwarden T. S. Eliot.
