About Old St Andrew
Old St Andrew is a Romanian Orthodox church in Kingsbury, within the London Borough of Brent. Formerly Anglican, it now serves Romanian Orthodox worshippers in north-west London under a lease granted in 2012. The church is Grade I listed and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
The present structure was built during the twelfth or thirteenth century, possibly replacing a Saxon predecessor. Formed from rendered flint rubble incorporating Roman brick and tile, it has a single continuous nave and chancel, a northern vestry and a western turret topped by a spire. Changes were made in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, followed by substantial restoration in 1840 and further work in 1888 and 1955. Notable fittings include a likely thirteenth-century font, a seventeenth-century oak lectern used by W. E. Gladstone, three memorial brasses dating from 1520 onwards, and three bells cast around 1350, in 1604 and in 1708.
