About King's College Chapel

King's College Chapel is a Church of England chapel at King’s College London’s Strand Campus in central London. Set within the college’s main historic building, it occupies an upper-floor position over the Great Hall and is reached by a double staircase. The chapel is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Sir Robert Smirke designed the first chapel, completed with the college building in 1831. After its interior came to be considered outdated, Sir George Gilbert Scott recast it in 1864 as a Renaissance Revival space influenced by early basilicas. Lightweight construction was required because of its position within the building. Wartime damage affected the stained glass, which Stephen Dykes Bower later replaced with coloured cathedral glass. A restoration followed in 2001. Notable decoration includes an apse mosaic showing Christ with angels, panels bearing the college motto, and painted portraits of early Christian theologians and Anglican divines.
