About Church of the Ascension, Victoria Docks
The Church of the Ascension, Victoria Docks is an Anglican church in the West Ham district of east London. It stands in Baxter Road and belongs to the Church of England. The alternative name Church of the Ascension, West Ham has also been used.
Its origins date to 1887, when a hall was established for outreach associated with St Luke’s. Responsibility later passed to the Felsted School Mission. Construction of a replacement church took place from 1903 to 1907, and the congregation received its own parish in 1905. Accommodation for female mission staff was established four years later. Author Mabel Knowles directed local mission activity for roughly a quarter of a century, beginning around 1924. During wartime, clergy assisted at Sandon near Chelmsford after its rector was taken prisoner in 1942. The parish boundaries expanded in 1961 to include the former St Matthew’s district in Custom House.
