About Church of St Luke
The Church of St Luke is an Anglican parish serving Canning Town in east London. Its historic Boyd Road building, near the Royal Docks, has Grade II protection. That property ceased to be consecrated in 1985 and shut in 1997, but the parish continues to worship in newer premises on Ruscoe Road. The earlier building now serves community and healthcare purposes.
Henry Boyd, the vicar at St Mark’s in Silvertown, initiated its creation. Designed by Giles and Gane, it was erected from 1873 to 1875 and consecrated in the latter year. Its Gothic Revival design draws on thirteenth-century English architecture, while a flèche takes the place of a conventional tower. Bombing inflicted serious harm in 1940, so the congregation met initially in a garage and subsequently in the hall. Provisional work was undertaken in 1949, with full reconstruction completed by 1960.
