About Church of Holy Trinity
The Church of Holy Trinity is a Church of England place of worship in Clapham, London, beside the northern edge of Clapham Common. This Grade II* listed church continues to serve its local community through worship, activities, clubs and sports teams. It is particularly associated with the Clapham Sect, a group of evangelical Christians involved in the campaign to abolish slavery.
Consecrated by the Bishop of Ely on 1 June 1776, the church replaced a medieval building that had become inadequate for Clapham’s increasing population. Kenton Couse designed the new structure, using grey brick, Portland stone details and a slate-covered roof. Its belfry has a modest lead dome and gilded weather vane. A portico was added in 1812, while the current chancel, vestries and Lady Chapel were designed by Arthur Beresford Pite in 1902–03. The organ followed in 1909. After serious wartime air-raid damage, restoration was largely finished by 1952. Memorials to the Clapham Sect include stained glass, a tablet and a blue plaque.
