About St Wilfrid

St Wilfrid is a Church of England parish church on Church Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex. It occupies an elevated and prominent site in the town and has also served as the parent church of two other Anglican churches in Haywards Heath. The building is listed at Grade II* in recognition of its architectural and historic significance.

The church was designed by George Frederick Bodley in the Decorated Gothic tradition. Its foundation stone was laid on St Wilfrid’s Day in October 1863, and the completed building was consecrated on Whit Monday 1865. Construction cost £6,000, with stone from a quarry near the town supplied without charge. Later additions included vestries and an organ in 1880, followed by a nave clerestory designed by Bodley in 1890. A clock was installed on one side of the tower, the burial ground was enlarged in 1899, and a lychgate was placed at the southern entrance in 1909.
