About Christ Church
Christ Church is a Church of England church on Brixton Road in Lambeth, London. Dating from the early twentieth century, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building and is distinguished by its blend of Art Nouveau and Byzantine Revival architecture.
The present church was designed by Arthur Beresford Pite for the Revd William Mowll. Princess Helena laid its first stone in December 1898, before the earlier building was removed the following year, and the completed church was consecrated in December 1902. Notable features include an exterior clock, an outdoor pulpit added in 1907, and five stained-glass windows. One, showing Saint Paul addressing the people of Athens, came from the former church; four others by Clayton & Bell depict biblical scenes. A Willis organ dating from 1919 was joined by a digital instrument in 2007.
