About Christ Church

Christ Church is a Church of England parish church in Wanstead, east London, within Greater London. It shares its parish with St Mary the Virgin and remains a place of Anglican worship. The building is recognised for its architectural and historic importance with Grade II* listed status.

The church was established as a chapel of ease for St Mary’s in response to population growth around Snaresbrook following the arrival of the railway. George Gilbert Scott provided the design in a Gothic Revival interpretation of late 13th-century geometric architecture. Its foundation stone was placed in May 1860, and the completed church was consecrated in July 1861. A fifth nave bay and a south aisle were constructed in 1867, complementing the existing north aisle. The tower and spire were completed two years later, while vestries were added in 1889.
