About Our Lady and St Peter’s Catholic Church
Our Lady and St Peter’s Catholic Church, on London Road in East Grinstead, is an active Roman Catholic parish church. It stands near the junction with Station Road, to the north of the railway station. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The Catholic presence began locally in 1879, when Sir Edward and Lady Gertrude Blount founded a mission based at their Imberhorne Manor chapel. Frederick Walters designed the present Romanesque Revival building, whose foundation stone was placed on 15 June 1897. The church opened on 2 October 1898 and was consecrated the following year. Walters also designed most of its interior fittings. In 1899, Hardman & Co. supplied stained glass for the north-east chapel, donated by the Blount family and honouring St Gertrude and St Edward.
