About Christ Church
Christ Church is an Anglican place of worship in Chiswick, occupying the east side of Turnham Green in west London. It belongs to the Church of England and is protected at Grade II. Hounslow Council regards both the building and the surrounding green as landmarks with notable historic value.
Plans for the church began in 1841, prompted by suburban growth and the difficulty residents faced in reaching St Nicholas Church near the Thames. Built for £6,900 and finished in 1843, it was conceived in the Gothic Revival manner by George Gilbert Scott with William Moffatt. A government church-building grant supplied £500 towards the cost. James Brooks lengthened the chancel in 1887 and introduced the square east end seen today. Changes made during the early 1990s included taking out the pews, installing individual seating, and laying concrete and carpet underfoot. Ian Goldsmith oversaw the creation of two-level community accommodation within the western bays in 2000.
