About The Parish Church of St Bartholomew

The Parish Church of St Bartholomew is a Church of England parish church in Burwash, Kent. Situated beside the A265, it remains an active place of worship and is designated as a Grade II listed building.

A Norman church was erected on the site in 1090, but its heavily built tower is the only element still standing from that structure. Wide bands of mortar visible between the exterior stones help indicate its early date. During substantial alterations in 1856, the chancel was replaced while its arch from the 1200s was preserved. The interior floor was also lowered, leading to the excavation of soil around the churchyard. Decayed wooden flooring required further work during 1989 and 1990. An iron memorial plate dating from the early 1500s stands in the southern aisle. Considered the earliest surviving example of its kind in England, it recalls Burwash’s role in the Wealden iron trade.
