About Mayfield Baptist Chapel
Mayfield Baptist Chapel is an active Independent Baptist church in Mayfield, within the civil parish of Mayfield and Five Ashes in East Sussex. Formerly associated with Strict Baptists and the Gospel Standard, it now uses its shorter name. Its teaching remains Reformed and Calvinistic, and the Authorised Version is used. Two elders share preaching duties, sometimes joined by visiting ministers.
Christian worship may have begun on the site in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, although the precise foundation date is uncertain. Initially an independent Calvinist meeting place, the congregation became formally Strict Baptist under Eli Page in 1871, when a baptistery was added. Structural problems soon required the original chapel to be taken down. A larger replacement opened in May 1873 on the same site with adjoining land incorporated. The present building is a restrained vernacular chapel, distinguished by its rendered frontage and a dated stone set into the gable.
