About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is an Anglican parish church in Corringham, Essex. Dating to about 1050, it remains in use within the united benefice serving Corringham and Fobbing. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Its oldest fabric belongs to the eleventh century, with parts of the nave and chancel possibly predating the Norman Conquest. The late eleventh-century western tower has a pyramid-shaped roof, round-headed bell openings and decorative blind arches. Its interior arch includes a small carved face near the top. Ragstone and flint form the main walls, complemented by Reigate stone and limestone details. During the fourteenth century, a northern aisle and chapel were added, while the chancel was raised and lengthened towards the east. George Gilbert Scott carried out restoration work in 1843, and the southern porch and vestry also date from the nineteenth century. Three bells were cast in 1580, 1617 and 1629.
