About St Giles & All Saints Church, Orsett

St Giles & All Saints Church, Orsett is an Anglican parish church in Chadwell St Mary, Essex. Originating in the medieval period, with its earliest surviving fabric dating to the middle of the 12th century, it is designated Grade I. Its parish now belongs to the combined benefice serving Orsett, Bulphan and Horndon on the Hill.

Flint and ragstone rubble form much of the structure, complemented by limestone dressings, tiled roofing and a weatherboard-clad spire. The northern aisle dates from about 1230, while the brick-built tower at the north-west was introduced during the 1400s and altered significantly in 1610 and 1674. Later additions include a northern chapel from around 1500. Following a blaze in 1926, the damaged roofs underwent extensive restoration directed by Charles Nicholson and Edward Fincham. Three scratch dials, believed to belong to the earliest building phase, can be seen below the entrance arch.
