About St James' Church, West Tilbury
St James' Church, West Tilbury, is in Chadwell St Mary, Essex. The Grade II* listed building ceased holding services in 1979 and was formally made redundant in 1984. It was later adapted as a private home, with part of the burial ground incorporated into its garden.
Dating from the late 11th or early 12th century, the church was built chiefly of locally sourced flint rubble and Kentish ragstone, with limestone and tufa around surviving early window openings. After the nave collapsed in 1711, much of it was renewed and the former stone tower replaced with a timber structure. W. Benton directed a further restoration between 1879 and 1883, including a new flint tower with stone detailing and a clock. Memorials include one to Lady Gordon and the Revd Sir Adam Gordon, and another commemorating 14 parishioners killed in the two world wars. Its five later bells were transferred to other churches in Orsett Deanery.
