About Shover's Green Baptist Chapel
Shover's Green Baptist Chapel stands near Wadhurst in Kent and was completed in 1817 for a Strict Baptist congregation. Worship ceased around 1973, after which the property became a home. Its architectural and historic interest was recognised through designation at Grade II in 1978.
The congregation originated with 24 people who departed from Burwash’s Providence Chapel late in 1815. Building work commenced in spring 1816. The modest, one-floor structure presents three evenly arranged sections beneath a slate-covered roof sloping on every side. Curved window tops and wooden shutters distinguish the front, where paired entrance doors sit below a simple projecting cover. Alterations made in 1876 replaced the initial timber construction and boarded outer surface with masonry and tile hanging. A later side addition first served as a vestry, while the original pulpit was positioned against the back wall, flanked by windows.
