About St. Mary the Virgin, Great Warley
St. Mary the Virgin, Great Warley is a Church of England parish church in the Brentwood borough of Essex. It continues to serve Great Warley and is protected as a Grade I listed building, reflecting its exceptional architectural and historic importance.
The church was built in 1902 to designs by Charles Harrison Townsend, with the Heseltine family providing both the site and the funding. It was consecrated two years later, in 1904. Its particularly distinctive interior was created by Sir William Reynolds-Stephens in the Modern Style, the British expression of Art Nouveau. The churchyard also contains the Second World War grave of an officer who served with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
