About New Church of St Nicholas
The New Church of St Nicholas is an Anglican parish church serving Kelvedon Hatch in the Brentwood area of Essex. Consecrated in 1895, it remains the local place of worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The parish church was recorded by about 1254. Its medieval predecessor was completely reconstructed during the early 1750s and repaired in 1873. After the village’s population shifted away from the old site, a replacement was built closer to the new centre at a cost of £2,000. Local architect John Thomas Newman designed the red-brick building on land previously set aside for a cemetery. Historic fittings were transferred to it, including an octagonal font thought to be from the 15th century, a bell dating from roughly 1460 to 1480, and Victorian seating. The church underwent further restoration in 1927.
