About St Peter and St Paul
St Peter and St Paul is the Church of England parish church serving Yalding in Kent. Dedicated to both apostles, it is recognised for its exceptional architectural and historic importance through Grade I designation.
The earliest fabric dates from the 1200s, including the nave, chancel and tower. Aisles and transepts followed in the early 1300s, with porches added later in that century and further changes made during the 1400s. Restoration campaigns took place across the 1800s and 1900s. The cross-shaped structure uses mainly roughly laid ragstone and sandstone, while sections of the nave and chancel are rendered. Its tower incorporates narrow pointed openings and a south-eastern staircase turret, which rises to an onion-shaped lead roof beneath a 1734 weathervane. Within are pointed arches carried on eight-sided pillars, timber ceilings and memorials spanning several centuries. One window in the chancel honours poet Edmund Blunden.
