About Church of St Margaret

The Church of St Margaret in Benfleet, Essex, is an active Church of England church close to Bowers Gifford. Set among open land and marshes, it remains in regular use for Sunday worship and for weddings, baptisms and funerals. The building has Grade II* listed status.

The present church was erected by the Gifford family in about 1350, replacing a wooden place of worship from the Saxon period, and is dedicated to Margaret of Antioch. Designed in the Perpendicular Gothic tradition, it has a nave, chancel, porch on the south side and a tower at the western end. Its fabric combines Kentish ragstone rubble, flint and Roman brick, with Reigate stone used for architectural details. The early sixteenth-century tower supports a timber bell structure and a cedar-shingled octagonal spire. Three bells include two cast around 1380 and 1400. A large brass commemorating Sir John Giffard was recovered, returned and repaired in the nineteenth century.
