About Church of St Margaret
The Church of St Margaret is a Church of England parish church near Horsmonden in Tonbridge, Kent. Standing within a farmyard away from the village, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Construction of the present church began around 1260, replacing a Norman church dating from about 1100. Much of the work was overseen by Henry de Grofhurst, rector between 1311 and 1361, whose memorial brass lies in the chancel. The building is made from sandstone and now has a Welsh slate roof. This replaced clay tiles during the late nineteenth century, while wooden shingles had covered the roof in the eighteenth century. A memorial bust on the south wall commemorates the nineteenth-century inventor John Read, whose work included the round oast house and the stomach pump.
