About Church of St Dunstan, Cranbrook
The Church of St Dunstan, Cranbrook is a Church of England church serving Cranbrook and Sissinghurst in Kent. Known locally as the Cathedral of the Weald, it holds Grade I listed status and comes under the Weald Deanery in the Diocese of Canterbury.
Its origins lie near the end of the thirteenth century, with additions made over several later periods. The porch and the arch leading into the chancel followed around a hundred years afterwards, while the nave and tower were completed during subsequent work. Rising 74 feet, the tower was finished in 1425. Its southern side displays a timber carving of Father Time with a scythe, and the tower holds an early clock mechanism used as the model for the clock at Big Ben. William Slater and Ewan Christian carried out restoration in 1863. Comfort Starr, who was born in Cranbrook and helped establish Harvard College, was baptised here in 1589 and is remembered by a memorial tablet.
