About St Augustine's Church, Hedon

St Augustine's Church, Hedon serves the Church of England parish in Hedon, within the East Riding of Yorkshire near Hull. Still used for Anglican worship, it is protected with Grade I status and is widely nicknamed the King of Holderness.

The present structure is largely medieval, with its earliest surviving work dating from around 1190. Its cruciform layout includes a central tower, nave with side aisles, cross-arms and sanctuary. Gothic details include arched and ornamented windows, substantial external supports, decorative entrances, pinnacles and an openwork parapet crowning the tower. Repairs and restoration were recorded before 1831. Within, rows of pointed arches separate the main body from the aisles. A damaged stone figure depicting a chain-mailed man lies opposite the southern doorway. Arthur Nelson constructed the pipe organ in 1926.
