About St George's Church, Goltho
St George’s Church, Goltho is a former Anglican place of worship at Goltho, near Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. The Grade II* listed church is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. Set amid fields, it represented the sole surviving above-ground trace of a vanished medieval community. Fire devastated the building in October 2013, possibly after a lightning strike, and by 2020 it had neither reopened nor been repaired.
Goltho Hall’s Grantham family had the nave reconstructed around 1530, with the chancel following roughly seventy years later. Work was also undertaken in the early 1700s and towards the end of the Victorian period. The compact building used red brick and roof tiles, with a western bell housing and a chancel smaller than the nave. The fire destroyed its painted fittings, including enclosed Georgian seating, a two-level pulpit and an early eighteenth-century altar backdrop. Surviving historical details had included a pair of seventeenth-century memorial stones embedded in the nave floor.
