About East Riding Theatre
East Riding Theatre is a Grade II listed former church in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire. The building now accommodates a theatre, café and 192-seat auditorium arranged around a stage extending into the audience.
Built to G. F. Pennington’s design, the church began serving a Particular Baptist congregation in 1910 and ceased religious use in 1964. It subsequently belonged to the local authority, functioning for a period as a vaccination centre before storing council records between 1995 and 2007. Permission for theatrical conversion followed in 2013, with the venue opening in 2014. The English Free design combines red brickwork, stone ornament and slate roofing. At the front, a shallow stone entrance contains a pair of round-topped openings beneath carved decorative work and an expansive window with tracery. Further details include a timber bell housing above the roof and a projecting stairwell on the left.
