About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is a Church of England parish church in Appledore, Bideford, Devon. Positioned beside the quay with views across the River Torridge, it continues to serve the local parish. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building, recognising its architectural and historic interest.
Its foundation stone was placed in 1836, and the building was dedicated in 1838. The origins of a separate place of worship in Appledore are thought to date back further, following the removal of Protestant dissenters from Northam’s parish church in 1662. They established a chapel of their own in 1699. Among the church’s notable features is a timber screen made using wood from the sailing vessel Marco Polo.
