About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is the Church of England parish church serving Bideford, Devon. It belongs to the Diocese of Exeter and remains an active place of worship. The building has held Grade II* listed status since 1949.
The present stone church was designed by Edward Ashworth and constructed between 1862 and 1865, replacing a Norman building dating from 1260. That earlier church had itself occupied the location of a Saxon cob-and-wattle structure. Its surviving medieval tower has a battlemented top and contains eight bells, cast in 1722 and 1876. Limestone detailing contrasts with the rubble-stone walls. Older furnishings include a granite font thought to date from around 1080, early Tudor carvings reused in the tower screen, and the 1513 tomb of Sir Thomas Grenville. The All Saints’ Chapel features an engraved glass screen by Peter Tysoe, dedicated in 1982.
