About Parish Church of St Peter

The Parish Church of St Peter stands in Lewtrenchard, Devon, and belongs to the Church of England’s Exeter Diocese. It remains a parish church within the Lifton benefice and is protected as a Grade I listed building. A modern addition provides a vestry, kitchen and space for meetings.

Although an earlier place of worship dedicated to St Petroc once occupied the site, nothing identifiable survives from it. Parts of the western wall date from work undertaken in 1261, while most of the present structure belongs to the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Much was reconstructed in the Perpendicular Gothic manner around 1520. Built from rubble stone beneath slate roofing, the church has distinctive Dartmoor quoins. Rector and antiquarian Sabine Baring-Gould oversaw extensive restoration from 1881 onwards and introduced furnishings gathered during European travels. The Pinwill sisters carved both the pulpit and rood screen, while memorials to Baring-Gould and his wife Grace stand in the churchyard.
