About All Saints Chapel, Instow
All Saints Chapel, Instow is a Church of England place of worship in the Bideford area of Devon. It remains in religious use, with services every week from November to Easter and monthly services throughout the summer. The chapel also provides facilities for community activities.
Architect Burnett Napier Henderson Orphoot planned the building to commemorate his wife, Marjorie Harriet Orphoot, following her death in 1933. Her sister supplied the site, while Orphoot paid for the construction and furnishings before giving the completed chapel to the village. Building commenced in September 1935, followed by its dedication on 27 February 1936 by William Cecil, Bishop of Exeter. Designed with Renaissance influences and room for 45 worshippers, it includes an eastern apse with an Italian mosaic-inlaid stone altar. Timbers of mahogany from HMS Revenge support the roof, and one Gillett & Johnston bell occupies the bellcote.
