St. Sampson is an active Anglican parish church on Bath Road in the Swindon area of Wiltshire. It now serves the united parish of Cricklade and holds Grade I listed status. The dedication commemorates Samson of Dol, a Welsh-born Christian leader associated with the establishment of Christianity in Brittany.
A stone church occupied the site by about 973, and traces of Anglo-Saxon masonry remain in the nave’s southern wall. Most of the present aisled structure developed from the late twelfth century onwards. The north arcade dates from that period, while the south arcade and chancel are chiefly thirteenth-century work. Later additions include the Hungerford chapel and a substantial central tower, begun in the early sixteenth century and finished during the 1550s. Ewan Christian directed restoration in 1863–64. Notable fittings include an 1888 west window by Charles Eamer Kempe, twentieth-century windows and altar decoration by Martin Travers, and Robert Jenner’s limestone tomb with its black marble top.
