About St. Nicholas
St Nicholas is a Church of England church in Berwick Bassett, near Swindon in Wiltshire. This Grade II* listed building has been redundant since 1972 and passed to the Churches Conservation Trust in 1973. Worship still takes place several times each year, and access is by footpath only.
The red-brick chancel was constructed around the beginning of the 13th century, between 1199 and 1221. A nave of sarsen stone followed during the 14th century. Thomas Henry Wyatt carried out extensive restoration in 1857, replacing the former timber tower with a stone one housing three 17th-century bells. Inside are a 13th-century font, a 15th-century rood screen and 19th-century furnishings, including the pews, pulpit and altar rail. Other features include a trefoil-headed piscina, a scratch dial on the southern wall and memorial tablets commemorating members of the Webb and Nalder families.
