About St. Mary's Church
St. Mary's Church serves the Church of England parish of Purton, around four miles north-west of Swindon in Wiltshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Bristol and remains in use for parish worship. Set apart from the modern village near a manor house dating to the 1500s, it is recognised as a Grade I listed building.
Work on the present structure began in the 1200s, with the nave built early in that century and the chancel towards its end. Later additions included transepts, a tower over the crossing, a south-eastern chapel and a western tower. Limestone rubble forms the walls, while slate and lead cover the roofs. An unusual feature is the combination of the tower at the west end and an octagonal spire rising centrally, found at just two other English churches. William Butterfield oversaw restoration in 1872, including substantial reconstruction of the chancel. Surviving interior features include medieval painting, older stained glass, a thirteenth-century font and nine bells, eight of them arranged for change ringing.
