About St Symphorian's

St Symphorian's is a Church of England church on New Road in the Durrington area of Worthing, West Sussex. It is recognised as a Grade II listed building for its architectural and historic significance.

Durrington had a church by the 11th century, and a later medieval chapel comprised a nave and chancel with a stone altar, font and pulpit, pointed windows and a small timber steeple. The building was badly damaged amid local conflict during the Civil War and gradually became ruinous, although occasional ceremonies continued into the 18th century. As Durrington developed during the 19th century, Anglican services resumed in a prefabricated iron church in 1890. A lasting replacement was constructed during the First World War, then enlarged while the Second World War was under way.
