About Saint Mary
Saint Mary is a Church of England parish church in Goring-by-Sea, Worthing, West Sussex. Standing on Ilex Way, it remains a place of Anglican worship and is protected as a Grade II* listed building for its historic and architectural significance.
A church dedicated to Mary was established on this site during the late 1100s, although there may have been an earlier Saxon place of worship. Decimus Burton substantially reconstructed the building in 1837, retaining the late Norman nave arcades and other medieval fragments while creating its Gothic Revival appearance. The rendered exterior has stone detailing, a slate roof and a three-stage western tower crowned by a tall spire. Inside, a mural of Christ in Majesty was completed by Hans Feibusch in 1954. A sculpture of Jesus on the south wall commemorates those who died in the First World War.
